Also known as “The Concubine Smiles,” Fei Zi Xiao earned its name during the Tang Dynasty. Emperor Tang Ming Huang adored his beloved concubine, Yang Gui Fei, and ordered a relay system to deliver this delicate fruit fresh from southern China all the way to the imperial palace in the north. The lychee, a favorite of Yang Gui Fei, was said to bring a smile to her face, and thus, the fruit was named Fei Zi Xiao, meaning “the concubine smiles.
